Angioplasty Overview

The specialists at Hattiesburg Clinic offer the latest in vascular care treatment. The angioplasty procedure, also known as balloon angioplasty, is a minimally invasive procedure that works by opening narrow or blocked arteries to help improve blood flow.

The procedure is highly effective in the treatment of several conditions. Procedures like angioplasty also work to reduce symptoms and lower the risk of serious complications in the future.

We proudly serve patients across Mississippi and beyond. When you need care you can trust, Hattiesburg Clinic is here.

How does the angioplasty procedure work?

The angioplasty procedure is a minimally invasive procedure used to treat several conditions, such as carotid artery disease. The procedure works by inserting a thin tube, called a catheter, into a blood vessel. This is typically inserted in the groin or the wrist.

This tube is carefully guided to the affected artery. Contrast dye is used to help your surgeon identify the location and severity of the blocked artery. At the end of the tube, there is a small, deflated balloon. The balloon is inflated to help widen and clear out plaque from the artery. In some instances, a stent may be utilized in the procedure to help keep the artery open. Once the balloon or stent is placed, blood flow can be restored.

Venous Stenting

Angioplasty and venous stenting are similar in that they both treat vascular conditions by working to restore and improve blood flow. However, venous stenting specifically treats narrowed or blocked veins, whereas angioplasty treats arteries. By placing a stent in the vein, blood flow improves helping with conditions like venous stenosis and deep vein thrombosis.

What does angioplasty treat?

Angioplasty can be used to treat a wide variety of conditions. This is not just limited to the heart. The procedure is often used to treat arteries affecting the legs, brain, kidneys and more. Some of the most common conditions we utilize angioplasty to treat are:
