Robert W. Walters, MD, PhD, FAAD, Emphasizes the Importance of Tinted Sunscreen in WDAM

Robert W. Walters, MD, PhD, FAAD, a dermatologist with Hattiesburg Clinic Laurel Dermatology, recently spoke with WDAM about the importance of using tinted sunscreens to protect your skin from UVA, UVB and visible light.

Tinted mineral sunscreens are gaining popularity not just for their cosmetic appeal, but for their enhanced protective qualities. These innovative, mineral-based formulations, infused with color and typically used as a light makeup foundation, do more than just even out skin tone—they offer greater protection against the harmful effects of both UVA and UVB radiation and visible light.

“It is essential to understand how to get the best protection for your skin,” Dr. Walters said. “More and more, we are emphasizing the importance of protecting our skin from visible light, not just UV light.”

Tinted sunscreens shield against the visible spectrum, which we now understand contributes significantly to issues like melasma and abnormal pigmentation. These products blend broad-spectrum mineral UV filters, like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, with pigments, including iron oxides. These pigments provide a skin-tone color that effectively reflects visible light away from the skin.

Visible light encompasses a diverse range of sources beyond sunlight. Examples extend to everyday items like light bulbs, indoor fixtures, electronic devices and the lighting emitted from automobiles.

For the best protection against both UV rays and visible light, Walters advises selecting a sunscreen or tinted moisturizer labeled as broad spectrum with a minimum SPF of 30. “You should aim to reapply every two hours, and if you’re in the sun for long periods, wear protective clothing such as a long-sleeved shirt or a brimmed hat,” Walters said. “If you go for a swim or take a shower, you will want to reapply more frequently for the highest efficiency.”
