Ophthalmology & Optometry

Hattiesburg Clinic's ophthalmologists and optometrists provide a variety of eye care for patients of all ages.

Ophthalmology & Optometry Overview

Ophthalmology and optometry are two medical specialties that focus on vision care and the treatment of eye conditions. The optometrists and ophthalmologists at Hattiesburg Clinic are trained to examine, diagnose and manage disorders that affect the eye or vision and offer a range of preventative and corrective eye care.

Vision is considered one of the most important senses, which is why eye care should be an essential component of our health care maintenance plan. Our comprehensive eye exams are beneficial not only for detecting vision disorders and conditions, but they can also reveal other health risks, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

We care for patients of all ages with eye conditions of all types. Common conditions we treat include cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, dry eye and lazy eye. We also have a full-service optical shop on-site for patients needing contacts, glasses and sunglasses.

Whether you are looking for routine eye care or are interested in our cosmetic eye procedures, Hattiesburg Clinic can help.

What is the difference between an optometrist and an ophthalmologist?

An optometrist provides primary vision care ranging from eye exams and correction to the diagnosis, treatment and management of vision changes. An ophthalmologist performs medical and surgical interventions for eye conditions, including glaucoma, cataracts and laser eye surgery.

What options do I have to repair my vision?

Hattiesburg Clinic’s ophthalmology physicians are pleased to work with patients who are looking for a surgical option to improve their vision. Laser vision correction is a type of surgery which helps correct certain issues such as myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism.

Why do I need my eyes dilated?

Your physician may choose to dilate your eyes during your visit. Dilating your eyes lets more light into your eye which helps your physician check for common eye problems.

What is dry eye?

Dry eye occurs when the eye does not produce enough tears to stay healthy and comfortable. Normally, the eye keeps moist by producing tears at a slow and steady pace. Some symptoms of dry eye include:

  • Stinging or burning of the eye
  • Scratchiness
  • Discomfort from contact lenses
  • Excessive irritation

Also, excessive tearing from dry eye can be a reaction to discomfort.

What does having floaters and/or flashers mean?

Floaters are a small speck or line that moves in your field of vision. Flashes are strands of light or lightening streaks that flicker across the visual field. Eye floaters and flashes are caused by the natural shrinking of the gel-like fluid in your eye (vitreous) that happens as you age. Contact your eye doctor immediately if you notice a sudden appearance of flashes of light and/or floaters.

Why do I need “readers”?

As we get older, our eyes naturally start to change. These changes can happen in a variety of ways at different times for different people, but one of the most common changes is caused by presbyopia. Presbyopia is when the natural lens inside your eye that allows you to change focus becomes more rigid making it more difficult to accommodate near vision.
