BOTOX Overview

By blocking the release of acetylcholine, a chemical released by the skin’s nerve cells that cause wrinkles, BOTOX effectively eliminates the appearance of facial wrinkles around the eyes, forehead, and/or mouth.

How is BOTOX administered?

Before receiving BOTOX in our office, a patient’s face will be marked to designate the treatment area. Keep in mind that the injection point may not be on the actual wrinkle itself, but where the muscle contracts. A numbing cream and antiseptic will be applied to minimize any discomfort. After the cream and antiseptic are applied, a physician will administer the BOTOX through a series of small injections with a tiny needle just below the skin. The length of the procedure varies depending on the number of areas to be treated but typically takes no more than 20 minutes.

Am I a good candidate for BOTOX?

If you want to minimize the appearance of laughter lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles on the face, BOTOX may be right for you. Most of our BOTOX patients are men and women between the ages of 35 and 60, and the best candidates are those who have reasonably good skin tone without excessive sun damage.

It’s also important to have realistic expectations of your results since BOTOX will not treat sagging, drooping, or sun-damaged skin. If you are pregnant, nursing, have allergies to bovine products or local anesthetics, or have certain other medical conditions, you may not be a suitable candidate for botulinum toxin type A injections. It’s always important to consult with your doctor about your medical history before having a BOTOX treatment.

What kind of post-procedure care can I expect after BOTOX?

Aside from staying out of the sun, you’ll be able to resume normal activities immediately following your Botox injection. While there is little to no recovery time, your dermatologist may instruct you to avoid bending or lying down for up to four hours after treatment to keep the compound from moving to other areas of the face. Also, patients should not rub the facial area for at least 12 hours after the injection. Any discomfort can be treated with over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen. Patients should refrain from taking aspirin since this could increase bruising of the treatment area.

What are the typical results of BOTOX?

BOTOX is a quick and easy procedure that produces dramatic results. Patients generally see the full effects of BOTOX within one week of the injections, and they usually last between three to six months.
