Concussion Overview
A concussion is a traumatic brain injury caused by a bump, blow or jolt to the head or by an impact on the body that causes the brain to move rapidly back and forth. Each year, there are more than 3.8 million sports-related concussions in the United States — and many others that occur due to accidents or mishaps in daily life.
The movement of the brain within the skull caused by a concussion damages brain cells and temporarily disrupts the brain’s normal function.
While most concussions are not life-threatening, the injury should be taken seriously. Anyone who experiences a concussion should seek care from a provider with specialized training.
