Cardiac Calcium Scoring

Hattiesburg Clinic offers advanced imaging and screening services to identify risks and prevent heart problems.

Cardiac Calcium Scoring Overview

A cardiac calcium score test is a cardiovascular scan of the heart offered at Hattiesburg Clinic. This non-invasive scan takes images of the coronary arteries and is used to help our cardiologists uncover heart health risks before patients even start to develop symptoms. It often only takes 10-15 minutes and helps tailor treatment plans to reduce your risk of developing heart disease or your chances of having a heart attack.

Cardiac calcium scoring is one of the many heart care services Hattiesburg Clinic offers to begin your prevention journey. Talk with your primary care provider to schedule your calcium scoring.

Am I a candidate for a coronary calcium score test?

Patients between the ages of 40 and 70 years-old who have any of the following risk factors may be considered for cardiac calcium scoring:

  • Patients who smoke or have previously smoked
  • Patients who have a family history of heart disease
  • Patients who have high blood pressure or high cholesterol
  • Patients who have diabetes
  • Patients who are obese
  • Patients with sedentary lifestyles

Coronary calcium scoring requires a physician referral. If you have any concerns, talk with your primary care physician to see if cardiac calcium scoring is right for you.

What is a normal cardiac calcium score?

While individual patients’ scores can vary depending on lifestyle, family history and other factors, lower scores indicate a lower risk of heart disease or blocked arteries. The more calcium buildup you have, the higher your risk of developing coronary artery disease or other heart problems.

Because cardiac calcium scores can increase as you get older, your doctor may recommend repeating a calcium score test every three to five years.

How can I lower my cardiac calcium score?

You can help lower your cardiac calcium score with lifestyle changes, including eating healthy, exercising, stopping smoking and limiting dairy products and excessive alcohol consumption. Our skilled team of cardiologists will work with you to provide recommendations on lowering your cardiac calcium score and improving your overall heart health.
