Stay Healthy During Flu Season

Flu season is in full swing, presenting a significant health challenge for many people. Influenza, commonly known as the flu, is a contagious respiratory illness that can cause mild to severe symptoms and, in some cases, lead to serious complications.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), it is estimated that between 12 and 22 million people in the United States have been diagnosed with the flu since October 1, 2024.

Protecting yourself and those around you is of utmost importance and requires vigilance and proactive measures. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to minimize your risk and maintain good health during this time of year.

Get Vaccinated

The flu vaccine is your best defense against influenza. It is recommended for everyone aged six months and older, especially for individuals at higher risk, such as the elderly, young children and those with chronic health conditions. Vaccination not only protects you but also helps prevent the spread of the virus to others.

As a convenience to our patients, Hattiesburg Clinic offers walk-in flu shots Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., on the first floor of the main clinic, located at 415 S. 28th Ave., in Hattiesburg. Flu shots are available to the public at this location throughout the 2024-25 flu season for those five years of age and older.

Practice Good Hygiene

Washing your hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after coughing, sneezing or touching public surfaces, is crucial. If soap and water are unavailable, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60 percent alcohol. Avoid touching your face, as the flu virus can enter your body through your eyes, nose and mouth.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Eating a balanced diet that incorporates fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins supports your immune system. Staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water keeps your body functioning optimally. Getting adequate sleep, aiming for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night, strengthens your immunity. Regular, moderate exercise can also boost your immune system and overall health.

Avoid Close Contact

Minimize exposure to sick individuals to reduce your risk of infection. If you feel unwell, stay home to prevent spreading the virus to others.

Disinfect Frequently Touched Surfaces

Clean doorknobs, light switches, keyboards and other high-touch surfaces regularly using disinfectant wipes or sprays to limit the spread of germs.

Be Prepared

Keep over-the-counter medications, tissues and a thermometer on hand. If you suspect you have the flu, consult a health care provider promptly for advice and potential antiviral treatment.

Practice Respiratory Etiquette

Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue or your elbow when coughing or sneezing, and dispose of tissues properly by throwing them in the trash immediately. Be sure to wash your hands afterward.
