Electroencephalogram (EEG)

Trust the expert and compassionate neurologists at Hattiesburg Clinic to perform your EEG testing.

Electroencephalogram (EEG) Overview

An electroencephalogram, otherwise known as an EEG, is a non-invasive test used to measure the brain’s electrical activity. Neurologists use small, flat, metal electrodes on the scalp to detect the electrical impulses that your brain produces during certain stimuli. At Hattiesburg Clinic, we can perform EEGs at the clinic to give a real-time comprehensive understanding of your brain activity and functionality.

What does an EEG measure?

An EEG measures brainwave patterns and electrical activity across different areas of your brain. We categorize these brain wave types into alpha, beta, theta and delta waves. Any changes or irregularities in these patterns may signal neurological issues or disorders. EEGs are useful in diagnosing and categorizing seizure types, sleep disorders, brain disorders such as encephalitis, dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, or brain activity after a traumatic event such as a stroke, injury or infection.

What happens during an EEG?

During an EEG you will be seated or lying in a comfortable position. A technician will place the electrodes on your scalp using a conductive gel. Once the test is started you may be asked to perform certain tasks, like opening and closing your eyes, looking at a flashing light or changing your breathing patterns. For some specific conditions, you may be asked to sleep as we record brain activity. Most EEGs usually last 20 to 40 minutes, unless we are monitoring during sleep.

How to Prepare for Your EEG

Preparing for your EEG is relatively simple. We advise the following steps to help you get ready:

  1. Wash Your Hair: Wash your hair the night before or the morning of your EEG. We recommend shampooing twice to rid your hair of all oils and hair products. Do not use conditioner. Clean hair helps the electrodes adhere better to your scalp.
  2. Avoid Caffeine: Avoid caffeinated drinks like coffee, soda or energy drinks for eight (8) hours before your test as it can affect brain activity.
  3. Wear Comfortable Clothing: Wear comfortable, loose clothing that does not restrict movement or press against your scalp.
  4. Sleep Adjustments: Depending on the type of EEG, we may ask you to limit sleep to make it easier to observe certain brain patterns. The Hattiesburg Clinic neurologists will inform you if you need to change your sleep patterns before your EEG.
  5. Adjust Medications: Let the Hattiesburg Clinic providers know of all medications you are taking. Some medicines can influence the test results, so you may be advised to stop taking them before your EEG.

EEGs for Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia

An EEG offers valuable insights into the slowing and synchronization issues associated with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease. Key markers we often see in these patients are reduced alpha activity and increased theta activity while observing disrupted connectivity within the brain. While an EEG alone cannot diagnose Alzheimer’s disease or dementia, it is a useful tool in early detection and ongoing disease progression.
