Migraines

The neurologists at Hattiesburg Clinic offer BOTOX® for chronic migraines, the only FDA-approved preventative treatment to reduce headache days.

Migraines Overview

The neurologists at Hattiesburg Clinic understand that chronic migraines are throbbing, debilitating headaches that disrupt your everyday activities. Often accompanied by nausea or sensitivity to light and sound, migraines significantly impact your quality of life. If you are one of 38 million Americans suffering from migraines, the board-certified neurologists at Hattiesburg Clinic offer BOTOX, the first and only FDA-approved preventative treatment to reduce headache days in adults with chronic migraines.

BOTOX (onabotulinumtoxinA) is an injectable treatment for chronic migraines, which are recurring tension-type or migraine headaches occurring 15 or more days per month for at least three months, each lasting over four hours. BOTOX injections work by blocking the pathway of pain signals. As muscles relax, the discomfort associated with chronic migraines is reduced.

Many treatment options are used to decrease pain during the onset of a chronic headache, but BOTOX prevents migraines before the onset. Additionally, BOTOX treatments are administered once every three months as opposed to daily oral medications.

If you are suffering from chronic migraines, our board-certified neurologists are here to help you find relief.

How is BOTOX administered?

Before administering BOTOX, our providers meet with patients for an initial consultation, which usually lasts 20-30 minutes.

The procedure begins with our team of experts marking the treatment areas on the patient’s face, followed by the application of a numbing cream and antiseptic to minimize discomfort. BOTOX is then administered through a series of small injections with a tiny needle just below the skin, targeting the muscles in the forehead as well as the sides and back of the head and neck. Occasionally, the injection sites vary depending on the patient.

While some patients may experience mild discomfort, they often state the benefits outweigh any minor side effects. Throughout the treatment, our physicians carefully monitor the patient’s comfort level.

The length of the procedure typically lasts 15-20 minutes.

Am I a good candidate for BOTOX?

BOTOX is a preventative chronic migraine treatment for adults ages 18 and older who have 15 or more headaches per month, each lasting four hours or longer.

You may not be a suitable BOTOX candidate if you have certain medical conditions or are:

  • Pregnant
  • Nursing
  • Allergic to bovine products
  • Allergic to local anesthetics

Your initial consultation includes a review of your medical history to ensure you are a suitable candidate for BOTOX treatment.

What kind of post-procedure care can I expect from BOTOX?

Most patients can return to work, drive themselves home and resume normal activities after receiving BOTOX treatment. However, each patient is unique. The most common side effect in clinical studies is neck pain, experienced by only nine percent of patients. To manage any mild discomfort, over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen can be helpful. Avoiding aspirin is important, as it can increase the risk of bruising at injection sites.

While minimal downtime is required, we recommend avoiding bending over or lying down for up to four hours after your BOTOX treatment to prevent the compound from migrating to other areas of your face. Refrain from rubbing treated areas for at least 12 hours after the procedure and stay out of the sun.

What are typical BOTOX results? How often will I need to get injections?

BOTOX treatments are usually administered every three months. Each treatment includes a series of multiple injections. Many patients begin to see results within a few days of treatment. With each use, BOTOX gradually reduces a patient’s number of headache days each month.

Are there cosmetic benefits to treating migraines with BOTOX?

Most known for its ability to decrease facial wrinkles, BOTOX offers many benefits. The BOTOX used for chronic migraines is identical to cosmetic BOTOX. While symmetry and functionality are considered, the neurologist’s main goal is to reduce headaches rather than make cosmetic improvements. However, patients often experience relaxation of their muscles near the injection sites, which can lead to a reduction in wrinkles.
