Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) are used to demonstrate how well an individual’s lungs are working and whether it is safe for the employee to wear a respirator. There are different types of pulmonary function testing available, however spirometry testing is used most often. These types of tests show how well air moves in and out of the lungs. During a spirometry PFT test, a nose clip is worn so all breathing is done through the mouth. The individual will use a mouthpiece attached to a spirometer to measure airflow to complete the testing.
