Glasses & Contact Lens Care

Hattiesburg Clinic offers helpful tips to care for your glasses and contact lenses.

Glasses & Contact Lens Care Overview

You have made an important investment by purchasing eyeglasses and/or contacts. Hattiesburg Clinic wants to help you take care of your investment through maintenance tips and best practices.

Cleaning and Caring for Your Glasses

You should aim to clean your glasses daily. Best practices for cleaning your glasses include:

  • Wash and dry your hands.
  • Rinse your glasses with lukewarm water.
  • Add one to two drops of dish soap to your fingertips. Any lotion-free dishwashing liquid will work.
  • Gently lather the lenses and frame.
  • Rinse with lukewarm water.
  • Dry your glasses with a clean microfiber cloth.

For traveling or quick touchups, use lens wipes or a lens spray with a microfiber cloth.  Avoid cleaning your glasses using clothing, household glass cleaners, surface cleaners or disposable paper products (such as paper towels or tissues). These items may cause smears, scratches and lens damage.

Storing and Wearing Your Glasses Properly

Below are a few tips on storing and wearing your glasses:

  • When storing your glasses, it is important to store them in a hard-shelled case with the lenses facing upwards.
  • Avoid leaving your glasses in a bathroom or kitchen where they could be accidentally sprayed with products, and do not leave your glasses in hot cars or by heaters.
  • To prevent misalignment, use two hands when taking off your glasses. Additionally, refrain from wearing glasses on top of your head.

Cleaning and Caring for Your Contact Lenses

Biweekly and monthly contacts require cleaning solution. To clean your contacts:

  • Wash and dry your hands.
  • Ensure there is no leftover solution in your contact case. If there is, pour it out. Do not use tap water, saliva or saline solution to clean out your case.
  • Fill your contact lens case with fresh solution. Change this out as often as the manufacturer recommends.
  • Remove your contact lens and place it into your palm. Massage the lens with solution for 15 seconds. Rinse with one more layer of solution. Place the contact lens in the case.
  • Repeat the previous step with the other contact lens.
  • Close the contact lens case.

Storing and Wearing Your Contacts Properly

It is best practice to replace your contact lens case every three months. If you notice damage to the case, replace it immediately. You will also want to replace your contacts at their designated intervals, such as daily or monthly.

Make sure your right contact is stored on the right side of the case and vice versa, especially if your eyes have different strengths. Your case should have indicators for left (L) and right (R) lenses. Keep your contacts stored at room temperature.

Avoid sleeping in your contacts, which can cause long-term damage to your eyes.

Adjustments, Repairs and Replacement

It may be time for a glasses adjustment if:

  • Your glasses are sliding off your face.
  • Your glasses are tilted.
  • You are experiencing physical symptoms such as headaches, pain behind your ears or blurry vision.
  • Your frames are bent.
  • Your nose pads are leaving marks.

Common glasses repairs include tightening screws, replacing nose pads, realigning crooked frames and replacing lenses. Your glasses and frames may need to be fully replaced if there is extensive damage or you have an outdated prescription.

For contacts, these should be replaced if your prescription is outdated or your contacts are torn.
