Pediatric Ophthalmology

The pediatric ophthalmologists at Hattiesburg Clinic have specialized training in diagnosing and treating vision problems in children.

Pediatric Ophthalmology Overview

The pediatric ophthalmologists at Hattiesburg Clinic are dedicated to caring for children’s eye health and vision from birth through adolescence. We treat young patients of all ages, and we are proud to specialize in complex pediatric eye disorders for premature infants, as well as infants in the NICU. Our specialists offer comprehensive pediatric eye care, including detecting and treating pediatric ocular conditions and performing the most advanced eye surgeries.

What is pediatric ophthalmology?

Pediatric ophthalmology focuses on diagnosing, treating and managing eye conditions and vision problems in infants, children and teens. Our pediatric ophthalmologists have special training and experience in meeting the eye care needs of our young patients.

Common eye conditions that affect children

Some children are born with eye conditions while other common vision problems develop as their eyes mature. Hattiesburg Clinic is trained to examine and treat a wide range of ocular diseases, including:

  • Strabismus (crossed eyes)
  • Amblyopia (commonly called “lazy” eye)
  • Diplopia (double vision)
  • Tear duct abnormalities
  • Refractive errors, including nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism
  • Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)
  • Eye infections
  • Eye inflammation
  • Congenital abnormalities, such as cataracts, retinal disorders and glaucoma
  • Genetic and developmental disorders

When should my child have an eye exam?

The earlier pediatric eye conditions are caught, the better the outcome for your child. For infants, we work closely to identify any symptoms that could indicate a more serious eye condition. Eye exams for children are extremely important to ensure your child has healthy vision and to detect any eye conditions as early as possible. Your child’s pediatrician and trained school screeners can help determine if your child needs a further pediatric eye exam with our team.
