Outpatient Surgery Overview
Hattiesburg Clinic’s outpatient surgery centers are staffed by medical professionals trained in a variety of areas and specialties. Our health care team is available to help our patients and caregivers before, during and after surgery.
Outpatient surgery, also called same-day, ambulatory or office-based surgery, is a surgical procedure that does not require an overnight stay. “Outpatient” refers to patients being expected to be able to return home the day of surgery for recovery. Through the use of advanced technology, more types of surgery are less invasive, allowing patients to return home the same day of surgery. Some common examples of outpatient surgeries include cosmetic surgeries, cataract surgery and tonsillectomies (tonsil removal).
If it is determined that outpatient surgery is right for you, here are some concerns you might consider discussing with your physician or health care team prior to surgery:
- What is the expected outcome of this surgery?
- How will the operation be performed?
- How long does this procedure usually take?
- Discuss medications pre and post-surgery.
- Discuss insurance coverage and expected cost of the operation.
- What are my anesthesia options?
- How will the anesthesia affect me? Are there risks?
- What is the recovery process for this procedure?
- How soon will I be able to return to work or daily activities?
- Will physical therapy be needed post-surgery?
