Pelvic Floor Therapy

Our licensed physical therapist at Hattiesburg Clinic focuses on women's health and pelvic floor therapy.

Pelvic Floor Therapy Overview

Are your pelvic floor issues causing pain, discomfort and disruption in your everyday life? Hattiesburg Clinic can help. Pelvic floor therapy is a form of physical therapy that focuses specifically on the pelvic region.

The pelvic floor refers to the group of muscles, tendons and ligaments that support your pelvic organs, such as the bladder, uterus and rectum. Overtime, things like childbirth or other abdominal/pelvic surgeries, chronic coughing, constipation and/or straining and aging may cause dysfunction in the pelvic floor.

Pelvic floor therapy focuses on improving, correcting and strengthening the pelvic floor muscles. We are proud to have a licensed physical therapist on our team who specializes in women’s health and sees women ages 16+.

The Purpose of the Pelvic Floor

Your pelvic floor is surrounded by muscles and tendons that help hold your organs in place. The muscles are there to help support the urinary tracts, reproductive tracts, bladder and bowels. When the muscles are out of balance or not working correctly, the muscles cannot operate the way they should. The pelvic floor is also an important part of your core. It is designed to function in coordination with your breath and other muscles above and below the pelvis.

Common Conditions We Treat

  • Pelvic Pain – Pelvic pain can be the result of many different traumas or injuries, such as pelvic floor dysfunction, childbirth, nerve pressure and pelvic organ prolapse. Our team will help determine the root cause of your pain and the appropriate course of treatment.
  • Incontinence – Urinary and fecal incontinence can be very disruptive to your everyday life. If you are experiencing issues like leaking or the inability to control your bowels, we can help.
  • Prenatal and Postnatal Conditions – Before and after childbirth, the body goes through many changes. If urinary incontinence, pelvic pain, core weakness or scar sensitivity and/or pain after cesarean section are causing disruption, we can help.
  • Pelvic Organ Prolapse – When organs like the uterus or bladder slip into the vaginal canal, it can cause pain and discomfort. Treatment can help.
