Ingrown Toenails

The podiatrists at Hattiesburg Clinic can safely and effectively treat your ingrown toenails. We offer same-day appointments.

Ingrown Toenails

Toenails are supposed to grow straight out, but ingrown toenails occur when nails grow into the surrounding skin. Often affecting the big toe, the nail can become ingrown from poor nail trimming techniques, stubbing your toe or ill-fitting shoes. While an occasional ingrown toenail is common, chronic ingrown toenails from diabetes or curved nailbeds require the help of a podiatrist.

Symptoms of an Ingrown Toenail

  • Pain and pressure in the toe
  • Redness or swelling at the corner of the nail
  • Pus or bleeding on the side of the nail

Ingrown Toenail Treatment

Ingrown toenails can be treated at home by soaking the foot in warm salt water three to four times per day. Cutting toenails straight across rather than curved will help prevent ingrown nails. If you have tried at-home treatments without success, it is time to make an appointment with one of our podiatrists. Those with diabetes should see a podiatrist for their ingrown toenails and avoid at-home treatments.

Permanent Fix for Ingrown Toenails

If you have repeated ingrown toenails, we can permanently treat them with a five minute surgery. In a quick procedure done in the offices at Hattiesburg Clinic, our podiatrists remove the portion of the nail and the roots that are ingrown. Called a Partial Nail Avulsion, only the ingrown portion of the nail is removed while still maintaining a natural shape and look to the rest of the nail. This procedure is very effective and results in permanent treatment and prevention of future ingrown toenails.
