Sarcoidosis

The pulmonologists at Hattiesburg Clinic offer expertise in treating sarcoidosis.

Sarcoidosis Overview

Sarcoidosis is an inflammatory disease causing clusters of lung nodules and other lung damage. While sarcoidosis can affect any organ in the body, it is primarily found in the lungs and lymph nodes. Sarcoidosis does not have a known cause, but it is felt to be an overreaction of the immune system.

According to the American Lung Association, women are more likely than men to experience sarcoidosis and black women are three times more likely to experience sarcoidosis than white women.

How do I know if I have sarcoidosis?

Those with sarcoidosis often do not experience aggressive symptoms, instead, symptoms are more subtle and disease progression is slower. Lung nodules may be forming for years before diagnosis because there are no other symptoms. When sarcoidosis affects the lungs, you may experience wheezing or a persistent dry cough. Your doctor will usually rule out many other diseases before a sarcoidosis diagnosis.

Hattiesburg Clinic’s pulmonologists will run a variety of tests including a chest x-ray, chest CT and lung function tests.

Sarcoidosis Treatment

If your sarcoidosis symptoms are mild, you may not require daily treatment, instead, only regular monitoring by your Hattiesburg Clinic pulmonologist. Immunosuppressive medications are used for the treatment of sarcoidosis including methotrexate, prednisone, antimalarials or TNF inhibitors.
