Spider Vein Treatment

Spider vein treatment is a cosmetic procedure that reduces or eliminates surface vessels or spider veins commonly found on the face and legs. Unlike varicose veins, spider veins, also known as telangiectasias, are not necessary for normal body functioning. They appear as very thin spider web-or tree-like veins on the thighs, ankles, calves or elsewhere on the body and can often be caused by hormonal changes, pregnancy, weight gain and prolonged sitting or standing.

At our office, we help men and women remove these unsightly and uncomfortable imperfections. Our spider vein treatment uses laser or intense pulsed light therapy, as well as a sclerosing solution that is injected directly into a vessel to cause it to slowly fade or disappear.

How is spider vein treatment performed?

Spider vein treatment is a simple procedure that does not require anesthesia. You will be advised not to wear any moisturizers, sunscreen or other oils on the day of the treatment.

The sclerotherapy procedure involves using a bright light directed at the vein. A tiny needle is used to inject a sclerosing agent into the vessel, effectively collapsing it and making it no longer visible. Each inch of vein requires an injection.

An additional treatment option is performed with a laser, the GentleYAG^®. The laser creates a beam of high-intensity light that penetrates deeply into skin tissue. This delivers a controlled amount of targeted therapeutic heat. The GentleYAG includes a technology that protects the upper layers of your skin with a cooling burst. This process offers optimal treatment with minimal side effects (patient results may vary).

Typically, spider vein treatments are performed in our office or an outpatient facility. The procedure can last anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes.

Am I a good candidate for spider vein treatment?

If you are bothered by the appearance of spider veins on your thighs, ankles, calves or elsewhere, you may be a good candidate for spider vein treatment. Both men and women can benefit from the procedure since it reduces the burning, swelling and aching associated with spider veins. However, if you are pregnant or nursing or if you have high blood pressure, cardiac disease, diabetes or a history of blood clots, you may not be a suitable candidate for spider vein treatment.

What can I expect after spider vein treatment?

There is typically little to no downtime following spider vein treatment. You will be encouraged to walk around after the procedure; however, try to avoid prolonged periods of sitting or standing to prevent blood clots.

Aside from some slight cramping and itching, you should not experience any other major side effects from your spider vein treatment. Although you will be able to return to work immediately, we may advise you to avoid strenuous exercise, sun exposure and hot water (such as a bath, whirlpool, sauna, etc.) for a few days.
