Carotid Artery Stenosis

Hattiesburg Clinic vascular specialists treat patients with carotid artery stenosis in Mississippi.

Carotid Artery Stenosis Overview

Carotid artery disease (CAD), also called carotid stenosis, is a vascular condition that occurs when the carotid arteries – the two large blood vessels in the neck that supply blood to the brain – become narrow because of plaque build-up. Other diseases can also result in CAD. If left untreated, carotid artery disease can lead to a stroke.

Risk Factors of Carotid Artery Disease

More than 795,000 people suffer a stroke each year in the United States, more than half of which is caused by CAD. Some conditions that can damage your arteries and put you at risk of CAD include:

  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Diabetes
  • Obesity
  • Smoking
  • Aging
  • Physical inactivity
  • Family history

Carotid Artery Stenosis Symptoms

Although carotid artery disease does not often present symptoms, there are tests (i.e., carotid ultrasound, angiogram, CT scan, etc.,) that can identify this condition. Carotid stenosis is sometimes discovered during imaging tests or procedures for an unrelated condition. This is why it is important to stay up to date on your medical exams and always see a doctor if you have any unusual symptoms or concerns.

If carotid artery disease reaches the point of stroke, an individual may experience the following stroke symptoms:

  • Dizziness
  • Sudden, severe headache
  • Numbness or weakness in the face, arms or legs (typically on one side of the body)
  • Drooping on one side of the face
  • Vision problems
  • Trouble speaking or comprehending

If you believe you have had a stroke, call 911 to receive medical attention right away.

Treating Carotid Artery Stenosis

If you are concerned you may have carotid artery stenosis or have a family history of stroke, ask your doctor for a referral to a vascular specialist. A specialist will consider your medical history, any symptoms you may be experiencing and perform a variety of tests to confirm whether you have carotid artery stenosis. He or she will also recommend a treatment plan to help prevent CAD from resulting in stroke.

Carotid artery stenosis treatment may include:

  • Medical management
  • Ongoing monitoring of vascular health
  • Diagnostic ultrasound and arteriography
  • Endovascular treatment (angioplasty, stents)
  • Carotid endarterectomy
