Revisional Surgery

Our Bariatric Center of Excellence performs revisional surgeries, including gastric sleeve revision, gastric bypass revision and lap band removal.

Revisional Surgery Overview

Our weight management team works hard to deliver long-term care to our gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery patients, but sometimes revision is needed. Revisional weight loss surgery is performed to improve effectiveness and minimize side effects of gastric bypass, gastric sleeve or band surgery. Whether you are an existing patient with complications from weight loss surgery or a new patient who needs modifications or reversal, our physicians will work with you to determine the best revisional surgery for you.

Types of Revisional Surgery

Gastric Bypass Revision / Revision of Roux en Y Gastric Bypass

If you have not had significant weight loss or have unpleasant side effects such as nausea, reflux or diarrhea, you may need a gastric bypass revision. Gastric bypass revision surgery can include either moving the roux limb further down the digestive tract to improve weight loss or converting the bypass into a gastric sleeve. Your doctor will work with you to determine which type of revision is right for you.

Gastric Sleeve Revision

Gastric sleeve revision can be a non-surgical outpatient procedure, where your doctor tightens the sleeve to decrease the size of the stretched stomach. In certain cases, you may be a candidate to convert your gastric sleeve to a gastric bypass. Patients who have reflux or difficulty swallowing after a gastric sleeve may be better suited with a conversion to gastric bypass to reduce the stomach capacity and calorie absorption. Sleeve-to-bypass conversion is often done laparoscopically or robotically.

Lap Band Removal

Lap bands were once a popular type of bariatric procedure but due to negative side effects and ineffective weight loss, there are better surgical options. If you have a lap band, weight loss surgeons at Hattiesburg Clinic can surgically remove it, making you a candidate for a gastric sleeve or gastric bypass surgery. Lap band removal is often done laparoscopically, making it a safe and relatively easy surgery.

What can I expect after a revisional surgery?

Weight loss after a revisional surgery is not as rapid as it was after the initial bariatric procedure. If converting a lap band to a gastric bypass, you may see more significant weight loss from the effectiveness of the Roux-en-Y. Our weight management team will help set these expectations and long-term care plans to help you achieve your weight loss goals.
